Usage[]

Bed protection[]

Oak wood planks are best used to protect beds in the early-game, since it is very hard to break them with a pickaxe. However, enemies with axes, TNT or fireballs can easily destroy them, as they are flammable.

Ranged class Strategy[]

Oak wood planks serve as a middle ground between wool and stone bricks, being stronger than the former and being cheaper than the latter respectively. The planks are a viable option to prevent bed plating breaks or bed breaks from early game rushers, slowing down those who opt to get through your bed defense without an axe. Should a rusher bring an axe, at the very best the planks outperform wool in durability as long as the rusher's axe is just a wooden axe, where it can then take 2 more hits before breaking compared to wool. Planks fall off in usefulness in the mid-late game because at that point everybody should have a decently upgraded axe capable of quickly destroying planks, and at this point wool and stone bricks have better usage due to being cheap, spammable, and tougher (for the bricks) respectively. Planks are best used in the early game where players can take advantage of its cost, but they should be reserved for eager rushers that put pressure on your economy by forcing you to spend iron to strengthen your bed defense.

When using this in your bed defense, it's a bad idea to make this the last thing between the enemy and the bed. If it is your last line of defense, the enemy does not need to switch tools to break the bed that the planks are covering, which is not only a waste of iron and blocks but also your time building the defense due to how fast the enemy can reach the bed. This is fine in early game where it holds up better against under-geared rushers running wooden tools, but you should swap it out once you're able to purchase stone and replace the last layer of defense. The planks also act as a good bait-and-switch layer when covering up much stronger blocks such as bricks or obsidian, and their superior durability to Wool means an explosive item won't reveal as much of the bed defense than if a layer of wool was exploded. However, you're better off using Blastproof Ceramic blocks at that point to prevent explosive damage. Both planks and wool can burn, but wool has the advantage of being cheap and quick to replace. On the other hand, the planks are bulkier and are significantly cheaper than blastproof ceramic. In the end, It's up to you how you want to spend your iron on blocks for a bed defense.

To summarize, use oak wood planks in the early game for the best effect, especially against rushers. They're a middle ground between wool and stone bricks that can slightly encompass each of the other blocks' roles, but this also means they'll fall off because of their lack of specialty and glaring weaknesses to axes and burning. If this block is to be used in a defense, be smart and don't make it your last defense. Instead, use it as a bulkier alternative to wool or as bait defense against explosives.
